María Mercedes Zambrano

María Mercedes Zambrano obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology (Wellesley College, USA) and her PhD in Molecular Genetics (Harvard Medical School) and was co-founder of Corporación Corpogen, an independent research center based in Bogotá, Colombia, where she now works as Scientific Director. She has worked for over 20 years in research and biotechnology and from 2008 – 2014 directed a national consortium working on metagenomics of microbial communities in extreme ecosystems in Colombia. Her current research interests involve work on microbial ecology, the study of microbiomes in diverse habitats and antibiotic resistance in order to understand microbial survival and persistence in diverse environments, from human associated microbiomes to microbial communities in natural ecosystems.
