María Romina Schiaffino, Ph.D., is an adjunct research scientist at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and a certified assistant professor at the National University of the North-West of Buenos Aires (UNNOBA) in Argentina. Her general research interests focus on microbial diversity patterns in freshwater aquatic systems and how this biodiversity and its aquatic environments are affected by human activities. Currently, her research challenge is to unravel the microbiome profile of Pampean shallow lakes (Argentina) that are greatly affected by several human activities and land uses. Likewise, her goal is to identify and quantify microorganisms that are potentially harmful to human health (e.g. pathogenic bacteria) in these shallow lakes used for recreational purposes.
