Martha Hengst is a microbial ecologist, with interest in microbial communities’ processes and interactions in marine and other environments. Over the last years, she has been working in microorganisms inhabiting extreme environments of high-altitude ecosystems from Chilean Altiplano, at the Atacama Desert. Particularly, her research group is studying adaptive mechanisms and evolution processes of microorganisms, to cope with environmental poly-stressors and the representative organisms probably living at early Earth that today are inhabiting in geothermal aquatic ecosystems dominated by deepest lineages of the tree of life.
