Michael Seeger Pfeiffer is biochemist and Doctor in Sciences from Universidad de Chile (1996). His doctoral thesis was carried out at the Gesellschaft für Biotechnologische Forschung Institute in Braunschweig, Germany. He is Full Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Director of the PhD Program in Biotechnology UTFSM-PUCV, Director of the Molecular Microbiology and Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María in Valparaiso, Chile, and the International Director of the Iberoamerican Biotechnolgy Network Isla Negra (RIABIN). He has been President of the Latin America Association of Microbiology (2004-2006) and the Chilean Society of Microbiology (2004-2008).
His research areas are microbial biotechnology, environmental microbiology and functional genomics applied on environmental bioremediation, microbial production of biotechnological compounds, and microbial interactions with plants. He is author of >105 international scientific papers, 2 international books, and inventor of 4 international patents. He has guided 29 PhD theses, and 35 master and undergraduate theses. He has been lecturer in 25 countries and has organized a dozen national and international congresses and scientific courses. He was the recipient of the “Scopus Chile 2013” award, granted by Elsevier and Conicyt, in recognition of the quality and quantity of his publications and the H factor in the area of Biology and Biotechnology.
