Mónica Vásquez Vásquez is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Molecular Genetic and Microbiology at the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. During her research she has worked on marine and fresh water systems with microalgae and cyanobacteria, trying to understand and characterize toxin synthesis and other secondary metabolites. Recently her interest is focused in two objectives: the first one is understanding the growth mechanisms and cellular division in filamentous cyanobacteria, characterizing new proteins associated to the divisoma of these organisms. The second objective is obtaining microalgae which are super producers of fatty acids such as omega-3 and understanding the synthesis regulation of these lipids in eukaryotic microalgae.
